International Tapir Survey in Several European and North American Zoos

Abstract

The public perception of tapirs in captivity has never been the subject of a specific investigation. The first extensive visitor study was conducted during a research project for a doctoral degree in zoo biology in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States between 1997 and 2000. The entire research topic goes beyond the scope of this newsletter, so I will focus on the results of a spot check questionnaire among zoo goers (precisely: tapir watchers). Altogether, their answers can be of some importance.
